Project Description

SWITCH Africa Green Project (SAG) is a European Union (EU) project established for the purpose of assisting enterprises to adopt and adapt Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) practices. The project is implemented under the overall management of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in six countries in Africa under three components: policy, networking, and greening business. Kenya National Cleaner Production Centre is working with the MSMEs in the Nairobi metropolis under Industrial Symbiosis pilot project to enhance their Resource Productivity and Environmental Performance. This project will run for a period of 30 months from January 2016 to June 2018, and is targeted to train some 600 enterprises to introduce them to the practice of industrial symbiosis.

Project Objectives

  • To promote sustainability among MSMEs in Nairobi by encouraging the reuse of other companies’ by-products by means of facilitating industrial symbiosis.
  • To promote the use of integrated waste management techniques in participating companies’ processes.
  • To demonstrate a large-scale industrial symbiosis network in Kenya, as a basis for replication to other areas in Kenya

Activities in the MSMEs:

  1. Mapping of MSMEs
  2. Industrial Symbiosis (IS) awareness raising and training/support with MSMEs
  3. Carry out in-depth assessments
  4. Provide technical support in resource efficient and industrial symbiosis to MSMEs
  5. Share experience and best practice ideas through workshops
  6. Develop an Award Schemes to recognize MSMEs
  7. Establishing a Centre of excellence in industrial symbiosis
