Soroptmist International Denmark and Kenya (SiD/K) Women and Climate Change Project

Description

This was a DANIDA project implemented by the Kenya National Cleaner Production that offered support to climate change mitigation and adaptation to women in households, smaller industries and capacity building of members of the Union of Soroptimists International Kenya chapter. With the coordination of the project between the 12 clubs, the organization successfully received a total grant of Dkr 125,000 (US$ 22,500) from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Peoples Climate Action (PCA) Secretariat. The project culminated by participation of over 50 Danish Soroptimists, who took turns in managing the SI exhibition at the NGO Forum, which ran parallel with the COP15 (the 15th Conference of Parties) held in Copenhagen in December 2009. The SI Denmark and Kenya project on Women and Climate Change ran for 3 years, and was implemented KNCPC with a grant of approximately Dkr 2 million (US$ 360,000) from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Project objectives

  1. Setting a portfolio of Climate Change and Cleaner Production projects across the country.
  2. Creating grassroots level awareness on climate change
  3. Implementation of Cleaner Production technologies and techniques in a number of textile, hotels, schools and fresh produce enterprises.

Achievements

  1. Training of over 50 Soroptimists in Kenya on RECP and Climate Change
  2. Demonstration projects implementation in 2 textile industries and one Hotel on efficient use of energy, water and waste water use and raw materials.
  3. Grants management
  4. 3 dissemination workshops held
  5. Study tours to South Africa and Denmark by two industry representatives
  6. Implementation of RECP in over 10 industries
